“African “Peripheries.” Challenging the Paradigms of Archaeology and Art”
Details
This lecture critically engages with the long-standing historiographical dichotomy between cultural "centres" and "peripheries," a model that has often ascribed innovation to the former and passive reproduction to the latter. By examining newly discovered wall paintings from medieval Nubia, the talk invites attendees to reconsider the validity and utility of this paradigm in contemporary archaeological and art historical discourse.
