Semester Serves volunteers will provide one-on-one friendly visits to two elderly nursing home residents in their private rooms, with the door open, who are unable to leave their room due to either physical limitations or personal choice. Students will be matched to visit for about 30 minutes each with one or two residents weekly to either socialize with them, play a game, read, watch TV, or work on a hobby. Volunteers should be confident in starting conversations with the residents and must be comfortable working primarily with non-verbal residents. Visits will take place at Eliza Bryant Village, which was founded over 120 years ago by the daughter of a freed slave and is the oldest continually operating African American founded nursing care facility in the United States. The program takes place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to Noon. This site requires a commitment of one semester. Transportation is provided in the CCEL van by the Semester Serves student leader.

The specific dates of the program will be as follows 2/16 (mandatory date due to on-site training), 2/23, 3/2, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13, 4/20 & 4/27.

Accessibility: CCEL is committed to providing all students with opportunities to take full advantage of our programs. Our staff recognizes that students with documented disabilities may require reasonable accommodations in order to achieve this objective. If you are interested in taking part in a specific project but have questions related to accommodations and/or the accessibility of a site, please contact the office of Disability Resources (216.368.5230 or disability@case.edu), and they will work with a representative from our office to answer your questions.
