McGregor Home is a non-profit senior care organization dedicated to meeting the changing needs of Cleveland's older adults throughout Northeast Ohio and Cuyahoga County.  McGregor serves older adults by providing residential care services on their campus and daytime activities. Semester Serves volunteers will work with residents and daytime visitors participating in the Opening Minds Through Art Program (OMA).  OMA is an award-winning, evidence-based, intergenerational art-making program created by Scripps Gerontology Center, the program focuses on people living with Alzheimer's disease or individuals living with neurocognitive disorders.  McGregor is collaborating with Scripps Gerontology Center, which is based at Miami University, to focus on building bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art.  The program allows McGregor Home residents to express their creativity and connect with college students. OMA is looking for students with medical and health science interests - but all majors are welcome. Volunteers are paired with participants to assist as they create art. Training is provided, and prior experience is not required.

The organization aims to provide future healthcare professionals the opportunity to:

  • Value the importance of maintaining the dignity and integrity of all clients, develop interpersonal communication skills to engage clients effectively,
  • Build a level of comfort in interacting with clients who live with dementia and,
  • Engage in reflective practice and connect this experience to their field of study.
