Research Opportunities
Seeking MS, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers in Biomedical image analysis and machine/deep learning at CWRU
We are seeking multiple researchers to work on exciting biomedical imaging projects, which will use advanced image processing and state-of-the-art machine/deep learning. Research funding comes from new, very large NIH grants to predict cardiovascular risk and to map the vagus nerve from the brainstem to target organs. We are seeking innovative BS/MS, MS, PhD, and postdoctoral computer science and biomedical engineering applicants for this joint project between BME and CDS faculty (Drs. Wilson, BME and Shuo Li, CDS). within CWRU’s Center of Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD). Participating faculty on the project include Dr. David Wilson (BME), Dr. Shuo Li (Computer and Data Science), and Dr. Satish Viswanath (BME).
The research will stretch engineering innovation. The cardiovascular project will use CT calcium score images acquired in the one-of-a-kind, free program offered by University Hospitals of Cleveland, which has resulted in >80,000 medical images to date. We will use AI to predict those patients who are at the most risk of having a future heart attack to enablepersonalized medicine. The goal of the unique human vagus nerve project is to map nerve bundles over the 50 cm length of the vagus using whole-body MRI, micro-CT, nano-CT, and 3D- MUSE microscopy, with our recent press release here . The project will create Penta-bytes of data to analyze, so we need to write efficient code for out-of-RAM visualization and analysis.
Please contact us for more information at wilson_recruiting@case.edu. To apply, persons should send an email stating why they should be selected with a resume or curriculum vitae.

Three Minute Thesis competition at CWRU (Attachment)
All CWRU graduate students with an original research project may compete.
Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) celebrates the exciting research conducted by grad students around the world. Developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), the competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. Competitors are allowed one PowerPoint slide, but no other resources or props.
Learn more about 3MT and the CWRU competition: bit.ly/3mtcwru23 or check out the flyer for more details. Register here.
Why should I do this?
Three Minute Thesis develops your ability to communicate the significance and outcomes of your project in a short space of time.
Provides good practice for networking and being able to speak about your project at conferences and other academic and social events.
