About the Talk

“A Conversation with Terri Lyne Carrington and Paul Ferguson”

Terri Lyne Carrington is part of the living history of jazz—a groundbreaking drummer, composer, and advocate for equity in the arts. In conversation with Paul Ferguson, the two will explore a range of topics including the compositional process, the role of space and object in jazz, the dynamics of interpersonal relationships in music, and the integration of vertical and horizontal dimensions in both music and life.

About The Speakers

Terri Lyne Carrington is a Grammy Award–winning drummer, composer, producer, and educator whose career spans decades at the forefront of jazz. She has performed with iconic artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Sample, Al Jarreau, and Yellowjackets. From 1997 to 2007, she toured extensively with Hancock across his electric and acoustic ensembles.

A professor at Berklee College of Music—her alma mater—Carrington was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2003 and joined the faculty in 2007. She has earned three Grammy Awards, including the 2013 award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, making her the first female musician to win in that category.

Carrington is the founder and artistic director of both the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and The Carr Center in Detroit. She also serves on the board of trustees for The Recording Academy, the board of directors for the International Society for Jazz Arrangers and Composers, and the advisory boards for The HistoryMakers and New Music USA. She is the host of Future Flavors with Terri Lyne Carrington, a weekly program on SiriusXM’s Real Jazz (Channel 67).

Paul Ferguson is Artistic Director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Principal Trombonist and arranger for the Cleveland Pops, and a longtime faculty member at Case Western Reserve University. A former member of the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller Orchestras, his arrangements are widely performed by pops orchestras and big bands around the world.
