ABOUT THE TALK:
Studying the way in which infants engage with music increases our understanding of the role of music in our lives and in our culture. Dr. Costa-Giomi will provide an overview of the emergence of musical behaviors in infants in their home environment. Drawing from research in language and music development, and her research in the USA, Tanzania, Spain, and Argentina, she will discuss the onset of singing during the first two years of life and the opportunities for learning provided by the home music environment. Dr. Costa-Giomi will then present a recently developed engaged scholarship project, Desde el Principio [from the beginning], a Latinx community program for parents and infants intended to strengthen family and cultural bonds and support music development.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Eugenia Costa-Giomi is a Professor of Music Education, Distinguished Professor of the Academy of Teaching, associate research at the Crane Center for Early Childhood, and Director of Graduate Studies at the Ohio State University. She studies at the National Conservatory of Music in her native Buenos Aires, Argentina, Indiana University, and the Ohio State University. Her research focuses on music learning and development, and the cognitive, social and health benefits of music engagement. She has published extensively and has served in the editorial and executive boards of professional associations in music education and music perception locally and internationally.
