CedarMag Newsletter: Academics, Activities, and Acknowledgements!

Kirby Gilmore - Tuesday, September 21, 2021
 Events

Hello, Cedar Mag!

Did you realize that the brain is the lungs' powerhouse? I'm only joking. However, the brain consumes more than a quarter of the oxygen consumed by the human body. As midterm season approaches, remember to take deep breaths in (hold) and out.

Each week, we will send you a newsletter. The weekly email will provide vital updates, information, and activities from our community and school. Please contact us if you have any queries or issues. We're here to assist you!

Love, Cedar Mag

Athena, Kirby, and the RAs!

COVID-19 Reminders
& Mask Wearing

We are transitioning to biweekly COVID-19 testing, as noted in an email sent by the executive director of University Health and Counseling Services. During the weeks of September 27th, October 11th, October 25th, November 8th, and November 22nd, you will be required to take a COVID-19 test. For a visual representation of the testing days, please see the "COVID-19 Testing Dates" picture. Tests are available in Wade Commons and the Robbins Building. Click here for additional information on COVID-19 testing.

Academic Resources on Campus

Maintaining a strong academic status requires time and effort. It is suggested that you devote two hours of study time for every hour of class you have. This rule isn't required for everyone to succeed in their classes. However, if your current study habits aren't getting you where you want to go, consider the following suggestions.

1. Space out your studies.

It's never a good idea to cram your studies the night before an exam. To guarantee that you have adequate time to examine new and old content from each course, create a study calendar around your classes. Use the 25-5 rule if you know you get "burned out" while you study. Study for 25 minutes, then take a five-minute break. Repeat the cycle until you've finished your studying.

2. Make use of images.

It has been proven that the more senses you used to absorb knowledge, the better your chances of remembering it. For some people, reading hundreds of thousands of words in a book is an effective study strategy. Try drawing visuals to illustrate the information if you're one of those people who can't just go by words. Draw out the cell for your biology class. If it's chemistry, make a stick figure named "Bob" out of the chemical make-up. Come up with new ways to visualize your materials. Additionally, you can construct a song with the material you've learned and then play it back to yourself to reinforce your understanding.

Feel free to look into these beneficial academic resources on campus here to help you.

Individual Consultations: Meeting with an Academic Resources staff member.

Peer-to-Peer: Fellow students who are trained to work with you on an individual and/or small-group basis.

Supplemental Instruction: Sessions led by students who know how to facilitate learning.

Success Workshops: Academic enhancement programs created and presented by staff members from the Office of Student Advancement.

Volunteer at Farm Harvest Festival 9/25!

Corn hole tournament!

The Student Sustainability Council’s annual Farm Harvest Festival (FHF) is back! FHF is one of CWRU’s largest community events every year, and so much of its success is owed to the help of many, many volunteers. Volunteers can help out by monitoring activities such as flower crown and lip balm making or scooping Mitchell’s and cutting apple fritters, and much more.

Volunteers are free to enjoy the festival before or after volunteer shifts by taking a hike, going on a hayride, and more!

Date: Saturday, September 25 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Shifts: 1.5 hours each (sign up for as many shifts as you’d like)

Location: University Farm (37125 Fairmount Blvd, Chagrin Falls, OH 44022) with free shuttles from campus.

Get more information and sign up here and email erb97@case.edu with any questions!
