Dr. Nadia El-Shaarawi is an Associate Professor at Colby College. An alum of CWRU, Dr. El-Shaarawi is a medical and psychological anthropologist whose work examines displacement, mobility, borders, and humanitarianism. She is the author of Collateral Damages: Tracing the Debts and Displacements of the Iraq War, published in 2025 by the Public Anthropology Series of The University of California Press. This book draws on long-term ethnographic fieldwork with Iraqis displaced by the 2003 US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. It explores the long-term lived consequences of imperial war as well as the politics of south-south urban displacement and third-country refugee resettlement. Drawing on Collateral Damages and newer work in progress, this talk brings together insights gleaned from fieldwork with Iraqi refugees in urban Cairo as well as multi-sited fieldwork along the Balkan route to consider the politics and lived experiences of mobility and humanitarianism in a time of intensified bordering and xenophobia.
