How do we write about the things that scare us? Why is it important

to explore trauma and oppression in creative work? What is the relationship of 'Black Horror' and its role in healing communities? Join us for an electrifying evening of storytelling, resistance, and imagination with Michele Tracy Berger, CWRU professor and author of Doll Seed: Stories for a powerful conversation and reading.

Doll Seed published in fall 2024 by Aunt Lute Books is a speculative fiction collection that centers female characters of color that have to navigate ruthless physical and psychic obstacles.

Michele Tracy Berger is the Eric and Jane Nord Family Professor in the Department of Religious Studies and director of the Baker-Nord Institute for the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University. She has a secondary appointment in the Department of English. Her short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction has appeared in 100 Word Story, Apex Magazine, Glint Literary Journal, The Wild Word, Blood and Bourbon, FIYAH: Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction, Midnight and Indigo, Oracle: Fine Arts Review, Carolina Woman, Ms., and various anthologies.

Much of her creative work touches on psychological horror through the lens of race and gender.
