KSL Library Advisor Newsletter

January / February 2026

Welcome back to campus!

Happy new year and welcome back for your second semester at Case Western! Hopefully you’re settling into the routine of being on campus and enjoying your new classes despite the freezing temperatures and constant snow showers. The library can be a great place to pop in for a break in between classes and grab a warm drink or snack at Cramelot Cafe.

Last semester you were introduced to the library and some of its resources but you’ll likely find yourself discovering even more this spring! In this month’s newsletter we highlight the physical space of the Freedman Center, show you how to access items the library doesn’t own, and services offered by the Freedman Center.

The Spaces of KSL

The Freedman Center is physically housed on the first floor of Kelvin Smith Library. This space offers flexible seating, computer workstations with specialized software, scanning, and other perks. This space is open for self-service and available to all CWRU students, staff, and faculty whenver the library is open. It also staffed from Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment if you want assistance. If you have any questions or need assistance don’t hesitate to ask the Service Center staff or reach out to the Digital Scholarship team!

Featured Service

Just like how you can meet with a Research Librarian for one-on-one research assistance, you can meet with a Digital Scholarship team member for support in using advanced technologies! Whether you have a vague research idea, need to learn about the tools at your disposal, or insight about the capabilities of different software, the Digital Scholarship team can meet your needs! You can find the available areas of speciality and make an appointment online.

Library How To’s

Do you want to learn more about how to use specialized software and apply it to your own research? Sign up for a Digital Scholarship workshop! These workshops require no prior knowledge or experience, they're useful at any skill level. Some upcoming workshops are listed below, but you can find even more on the Events and Workshops page on the libray website.
