Video - Ascenso Académico: Jornada de UPR a Yale

Attached here is a very informational video from two Ph.D. students (Adriana N. Vélez-Avilés and Daniel A. Colón-Ríos) who graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and currently attend Yale. In this talk, both scholars share their academic journeys, providing insights into their research and experiences. Adriana's research delves into embryonic implantation and infertility associated with endometrial pathologies, while Daniel explores pharmacological resistance in cancers with IDH gene mutations. If you are interested, please check this out! (NOTE: This talk is given only in Spanish)

Class Offering: SOCI 255

As we are currently amid class registration season, here is a great class you might want to take for the Fall 2024 semester:

SOCI 255: Special Topics: U.S. Colonization of Puerto Rico and its Aftermath (Tuesday/Thursday 4:00 - 5:15 PM), Taught by Professor Timothy Black.

This course will examine what many would consider one of America’s crimes of the century – the colonization, economic plunder, brutal militant repression, political neglect, and cultural marginalization of the island of Puerto Rico. Today, Puerto Rico has a poverty rate twice as high as Mississippi, a $74 billion debt, a political status that remains ambiguous, and an economy that is under the control of a U.S. imposed Financial Oversight and Management Board. Topics in the course will include: Spanish Colonization, the Spanish-American War, U.S. domination of the sugar trade, the nationalist movement, the Ponce massacre, the FBI’s torture of movement leaders, Operation Bootstrap and the industrialization of the island, the wealth extraction by U.S. corporations, the shooting by nationalists in the U.S. House chambers, the U.S. incarceration of political prisoners, the Los Macheteros $7 million Wells Fargo robbery, the Puerto Rican diaspora, Hurricane Maria and its aftermath, the islands’ debt, current efforts to turn the island into a paradise for the rich, and more!

If you are potentially interested in this class, register on SIS for next semester now!

Latinos in the Health Professions Virtual Event

The Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science will be hosting a virtual event from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM (10 - 11:30 AM CDT) on Saturday, May 4th entitled Latinos in the Health Professions. This will be an excellent opportunity to get to know students, faculty, and staff, and show how their 30-plus graduate health professions and science programs are preparing Latino/a/e students for their future in the growing number of careers they can pursue in the health professions. Here are some reasons why you should attend “Latinos in the Health Professions” at RFU:

  • Learn about the growing number of careers you can pursue in the health professions.
  • Engage with faculty and staff about programs that interest you.
  • Discover how our curriculum, with interprofessional courses, uniquely prepares students for their experience in a team-oriented work setting.
  • Gain insight into the application process while learning about the realities and benefits of completing a graduate-level degree. You will get to hear from Latino/a/e students about the services and support that our university offers to ensure students have all the tools for success.
  • Start a conversation with your family and friends about what your future in the Health Professions means for them.
If you are interested in this event, you can register here!

CareYaya Opportunity

CareYaya is a free, Patient Care Assistant Program that pre-med students can apply to! A lot of their pre-health professions students provide companionship care for the elderly through CareYaya to obtain experiential hours for their graduate school applications. They’re growing rapidly and looking for students to join as a Patient Care Assistant.
Benefits include:

  • Get direct patient care hours
  • No prior certifications required
  • Pay of $18-28/hour
  • Flexible work hours; set your own schedule (on-demand like Uber or DoorDash)
  • Meaningful work experience and 1x1 care helping elders in the community and advancing health equity
  • Experiences that make great essays for grad school applications
  • Collaborate closely with top healthcare systems (Atrium Advocate Health, Duke Health, Mass General, Emory Health)
  • Top caregivers get letters of recommendation from physicians for Med/PA/Nursing/other graduate schools
Although it hasn't expanded to CWRU, look here to see if you can apply to work in your hometown!

LMSA+ List of Opportunities

In an attempt to make everything organized and cohesive, we have made a running Google doc that is filled with volunteering, research, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities. We will be constantly updating it so make sure to check throughout the semester. If you have any opportunities you feel should be included in the doc, please email/reach out to us so we can add them! You can click here for the volunteering list, here for the research and fellowship list, and here for the scholarship list.

Keep working hard!
We believe in you!๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ
