Student-Run Book Club

Hello Everyone!

I’m super excited about starting this book club for the summer, and thank you to everyone who responded to the first poll! From the looks of it, we will be meeting weekly on Thursday evenings, from 7-8. I also want to suggest that from 6-7  anyone who wants to hang out, catch up on the reading, etc can meet at the designated location early!

For the first meeting, next Thursday 5/12, I figured we could have our first meeting Wade Lagoon by the art museum, since campus is a fairly central location, and we can pick other parks to meet at from there!
I want our book decision to be as collaboratively decided as possible, so based on the first poll everyone seemed interested in reading a professional book, or a piece of fiction that is relevant to our work as social workers. So if everyone could please email me 1 book option for us to read, and I’ll turn that into a poll! (I also think depending on the length of the book, we’ll have time for at least 2-3 books this summer!)

MyCom is hiring a Senior Data & Impact Officer to help us continue demonstrating our success!

The Senior Data and Impact Officer leads internal and external evaluation activity across the complete MyCom Network. The work includes comprehensive and neighborhood Partners. In addition, the Senior Data and Impact Officer supports the development and execution of the MyCom organizational strategy; and supports MyCom's role as a Youth Development Convener and Intermediary by managing the completion of research and evaluation projects.

As a comprehensive network, MyCom aims to maximize our efficiency by building a data culture within the MyCom Intermediary Team and among the network partners. This position will serve as a strategic programmatic leader, convener, trainer, and internal systems developer, with an ultimate goal of an creating and building an internal data system.

This position will also be responsible for direct supervision of intermediary team members, regional coordinators, and lead agencies.

The National Initiative on Mixed Income Communities’ (NIMC) mission is to promote urban equity and inclusion through impact research that achieves more effective and durable social change outcomes. Research Associate/Project Manager - Working with a high degree of independence, the Research Associate/Project Manager position is responsible for planning and carrying out the implementation of a complex public-private sector place-based initiative at Woodhill Homes in Cleveland. The goal of this initiative is to transform the high-poverty isolated Woodhill Home Estates and the surrounding Buckeye neighborhood into an inclusive mixed-income community.

Division of Children and Family Services; MST Therapist

This role helps families who have teens who are at high risk for severe system consequences, including court involvement and/or system removal. This program seeks to empower and equip parents with the skills, resources, and strategies they need to get back on their feet and work with their kids to get them back on track. We work using a hybrid model of both in-person and teletherapy, as needed, and we work with the many systems including schools, community resources, and especially families to get kids and families connected to positive supports. Louis Weigele

Introducing our Professor of the Month: Louis Weigele, LISW-S, BCD!

"I have a clinical practice in Rocky River and live in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland with my wife Rose, who is the co-owner of Abattoir Gallery in the Clark Fulton area. I find teaching very valuable for me as I am challenged to consider clinical and social topics that students bring to class which help evolve my understanding of the profession of social work and that of myself as a person. " -Louis Weigele, LISW-S, BCD

Professor Weigele was nominated because, "He does his best to make all students comfortable, and creates a common understanding of our class curriculum. Professor Weigele teaches SASS 547, and works to emphasize that clients and communities we will be working with are people first, and the diagnoses that we are discussing are secondary to the person. Also, their genuine care for his students has been so appreciated this semester."
