Lecture Title: "Role of Complement in Myasthenia Gravis"
Abstract: Dr. Kusner is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at George Washington University. Throughout her career, she has focused on the pathophysiology of myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune disease. Using a translational research approach, she has used animal models to investigate disease mechanisms and evaluate potential therapeutic strategies, examined the role of complement in disease pathology with emphasis on complement inhibitors. Her studies have also examined circulating lymphocytes from patients with myasthenia gravis, including the role of an anti-apoptotic protein survivin in supporting the persistence of autoreactive immune cells. In addition to her research activities, Dr. Kusner serves in a leadership role within MGNet, an NIH-funded rare disease consortium, as a member of the Executive Committee where she collaborates with scientists, clinicians, and patient advocacy partners to advance the field. She currently directs the Laboratory of Myasthenia Gravis Research at George Washington University and works closely with pharmaceutical companies to evaluate emerging therapeutic approaches.
