Lecture Title: "Active sensing for fly flight"
Abstract: Sensory neuroscience aims to understand the mechanisms by which information from the environment is transformed into information in the brain. Information is collected, processed, filtered, transmitted, and stored by neurons in both the periphery and the central nervous system, and each of these processes can be modified by the activities of other neurons or muscles. My lab uses the halteres, mechanosensory organs unique to dipteran insects, to study how the collection and processing of sensory information influences behavior, how sensory organs actively modify their own information streams, and how multiple sensory modalities are combined in the brain. Using quantitative analysis of behavior, electrophysiology, and optogenetics, we aim to describe the circuits that bring essential proprioceptive information to the fly’s brain and muscles to enable rapid, three-dimensional flight behavior.
