Lecture Title: "Ponto-medullary network mechanisms underlying the neural control of breathing"
Abstract: Breathing is a centrally generated motor behavior that controls pulmonary airflow to maintain blood-gas homeostasis throughout life. During eupnea, the rhythmic contraction of the diaphragm is sufficient to inspire. Since the demonstration that the pre-Bötzinger complex is necessary for the generation of this essential inspiratory rhythm, research has focused on the roles of individual medullary nuclei in the genesis of all phases of the breathing pattern. Here, I will present observations from my recent research which leverage the in situ arterially-perfused brainstem-spinal cord preparation and silicon multi-electrode array technologies to identify and further elucidate the ponto-medullary network mechanisms which underlie the generation and control of the breathing motor pattern.
