"Transgender Education: Gender Diversity and Equity in the University" with Dr. Gabrielle M.W. Bychowski

Creating an effective and equitable environment for education requires that a university continue to educate itself on the various needs and gifts of a diverse student, staff, and faculty population. In order to nurture an environment wherein all members of the university can be effective involves understanding of the common mistakes, misinformation, problematic narratives, and institutional roadblocks that affect everyone yet disproportionally stymie certain populations, especially along gender lines. Previously, special consideration has been given to the inequitable and intersectional circumstances that can exist for women as well as lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons. In recent years, however, greater awareness has arisen of the wider range of gender diversity that lives within, between, and across the categories of male and female, such as the distinct experiences of transgender, genderqueer, intersex, two-spirit, and other non-binary people. This presentation on "Transgender Education" seeks to provide a wider and more accurate perspective on the complexity of gender at the university as well as to incite conversations on how we can better build an equitable campus where all students, faculty, and staff are given the tools, access points, as well as the recognition of talents necessary to thrive.

Lunch and Learn sessions are free and open to the campus community. These events provide an opportunity for individuals to dialogue and think more deeply about issues highlighted in Diversity 360, the campus-wide diversity education program.

Lunch and Learns are held every first Friday during the university's common hour.
