An Imperfect Union:
Reflections on the Insurrection, Race, and the Future of America
 An Interdisciplinary Exploration
a panel discussion
Thursday, May 6, 2021
10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
On January 6th, a violent protest occurred against the United States government at the United States Capitol building, in which the Vice-President and Senators were certifying the results of the November 2020 election in favor of now-President Joseph Biden. The protesters, many of them armed, were there to support ex-President Donald Trump and seeking to stop the certification. As the insurrectionists breached, the Capitol complex and congressional chambers were locked down. Elected officials and staff sheltered in place or were evacuated. Over several hours, insurrectionists vandalized the complex; the Senate chamber, and lawmakers’ offices were ransacked and looted. By nightfall, more than 140 people were injured. Capitol Hill police officers were physically assaulted, and one died from assault—along with four others.

To support interdisciplinary work the Diversity Leadership Council under the leadership of OIDEO will present a panel discussion, student presentations and open dialogue around the events of January 6th.
