April brought the passing of Sarah Taylor, a familiar member of the campus community for the past sixty years. In 1964, Sarah graduated from London University, with an honors degree in Zoology, and came to Western Reserve University to work in developmental biology with James Weston. She met and married Philip Taylor, an Assistant Professor at Case Institute of Technology, and involved herself deeply ever since in the life of the campus. In 1996, Sarah created the CWRU Newcomers Committee, whose mission was to welcome new faculty and their spouses, partners, and families to Cleveland, and to introduce them to opportunities and resources on campus, in University Circle, and in the city and region at large. Sarah hosted events throughout the year to help new faculty and their families make social and professional connections. She also created a website to keep newcomers informed about upcoming events, activities, and services around town. For the founding and chairing of this committee Sarah received a Women of Achievement award in 2012 from the Office of the Provost and from the Mather Center for Women at CWRU.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3pm on Saturday, June 28, in the ballroom of the Tinkham Veale University Center. All are welcome, but if you plan to attend, please RSVP to taylor@case.edu
