In our polarized society, the ability to hold respectful and civil discourse with individuals of diverse backgrounds is a lost art. However, the need for such discourse within higher education is imperative in the learning environment. Participants will learn key dialogue concepts including group norms, how to foster braver spaces, active listening skills, and strategies to address hot button moments.

This workshop includes opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, professional students and postdocs to practice dialogue with colleagues/peers. Content will focus on the following learning outcomes to utilize in the classroom, campus community, and in the workplace:
  • Develop a foundational knowledge of transformational dialogue and its impact within a culture
  • Understanding of self as instrument and the importance of identity consciousness in dialogue
  • Engaging across the spectrum of difference through respect, compassion, and understanding
  • Creating the container for dialogue, setting the stage and being prepared for dialogue
  • Structured and unstructured dialogue techniques
  • De-escalation tactics during moments of contention and disagreement
This workshop will be led by Naomi Sigg, vice president for diversity, equity, & inclusion at John Carroll University.

Pizza, salad and drinks will be served.
