Dr. Jason Laker is Chair and Professor of Higher Education, Student Affairs, and Community Development within the Department of Counselor Education and Core Faculty within the Ed.D. Program in Educational Leadership at San José State University in California, where he previously served as Vice President for Student Affairs. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Men’s Studies and International Book Series Editor for Palgrave Studies in Global Citizenship Education and Democracy. His current research focuses on Sexual Consent Communication and Gender-Based Sexual Coercion and Violence Prevention. He has served as Chair of the American College Personnel Association’s Standing Committee on Men—now called Coalition on Men and Masculinities; as Founding Chair of the Men and Masculinities Knowledge Community in the National Association of Student Personnel Administration; and established the ACPA-NASPA joint Conference on College Men. He previously served as AVP & Dean of Student Affairs, Fellow in the Centre for the Study of Democracy, and on the Gender Studies Faculty at Queen’s University in Canada. His gender related scholarship includes three books: Masculinities in Higher Education (2011, Routledge, with Tracy Davis); Canadian Perspectives on Men and Masculinities (2011, Oxford University Press); and Advancing Sexual Consent and Agential Practices in Higher Education: Toward a New Community of Practice (2024, Routledge, with Erica Boas); along with five book chapters, 12 articles, dozens of conference presentations, and 23—now 24 invited or keynote talks. Jason is also active in International Higher Education, serving as a Senior Fellow for the International Association of Universities and as a Visiting Scholar at universities in Spain, Croatia, Kosovo, Slovenia, Pakistan, among others.

The American Men’s Studies Association embraces place-based scholarship as a core value, emphasizing the importance of engaging local histories, communities, and social conditions in the production of knowledge. In alignment with the 2026 conference theme, Masculinities, Care, and Community, AMSA is intentionally hosting the conference as an in-person event in Cleveland, where care, activism, and community resilience are actively practiced and negotiated. Gathering face to face allows for deeper intellectual exchange and affirms our commitment to scholarship that is grounded, relational, and rooted in place.
