Details

The methods section of a paper should be comprehensive and clear enough that readers can reproduce how the work was carried out. Participants will learn key principles of writing a methods section and apply the 5Cs in a sample exercise.

Goutham Rao, M.D., is the Jack H. Medalie professor and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at both University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University. He also serves as the chief clinician experience (wellness) officer for the University Hospitals Health System. Rao is an established senior health services researcher with a long track record of externally funded research. He is the principal investigator (PI) or co-PI of several large research grants. 

 

Rao is board-certified in both family medicine and obesity medicine. He has practiced family medicine for 26 years and obesity medicine for 11 years. He has substantial experience and expertise in the management of obesity and related cardiovascular risks from both a clinical and research standpoint. He is a former chair of the American Heart Association’s Obesity Committee. He has been a member of a number of other prominent committees, including the AAP/AMA Committee on Child and Adolescent Obesity, and the National Quality Forum’s Child Health Steering Committee and Core Quality Measures Collaborative.



Rao is an experienced medical editor, having served in a number of editorial roles and on several editorial boards over the past 25 years. He is currently the section editor for Global Pediatric Health and Current Cardiovascular Risk Reports. He serves on the Editorial Board of Childhood Obesity. Since May 2023, he has been serving as editor-in-chief of Family Practice, an Oxford University Press journal. 

 

Rao is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, including four books. He has been teaching writing skills to physicians since the year 2000 and has led writing groups for clinicians.



Dr. Rao earned his M.D. from the McGill University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Toronto and fellowship training in faculty development and research methods at UPMC-St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh.
