PhD trainers participation in one mentor training session annually is a requirement by the SOM. Mentor training is open to all CWRU Faculty especially those who advise and/or provide mentorship in a laboratory setting to PhD students and postdocs.
This mentor training session will be facilitated by Tina Roan-Lining, MSSA, covering a discussion on recognizing differences and promoting an environment where everyone can do their best learning, both because of and in spite of their differences. The format will be a short introduction to the topic followed by a group discussion.
Learning objectives:
Mentors will have the knowledge and skills to:
1. Improve and expand understanding of how differences can influence mentor-mentee interactions
2. Recognize the potential impact of conscious and unconscious assumptions, preconceptions, biases, and prejudices on the mentor-mentee relationship and reflect on how to manage them
3. Identify concrete strategies for learning about, recognizing, and addressing issues around differences in order to engage in conversations with mentees and foster a sense of belonging
