Mentor training is a key aspect to an excellent PhD program. The School of Medicine (SOM) Graduate Education Office is dedicated to creating a culture of continuing education in mentoring that promotes the open sharing of ideas for best practices. In support of this, we are implementing the Entering Mentoring Mentor Training Curriculum established by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).

PhD trainers participation in one mentor training session annually is a requirement by the SOM. Mentor training is open to all CWRU Faculty especially those who advise and/or provide mentorship in a laboratory setting to PhD students and postdocs.

Our November 2025 mentor training sessions will be facilitated by Tessianna Misko, PhD, covering a discussion on creating dialogue about expectations. The format will be a short introduction to the topic followed by a group discussion.

Learning objectives:
1. Effectively establish mutually beneficial expectations for the mentoring relationship
2. Clearly communicate expectations for the mentoring relationship
3. Align mentee and mentor expectations
4. Consider how personal and professional differences may influence expectations, including differences across disciplines when working in multidisciplinary teams
