Legal Highs: The Rise of Intoxicating Hemp Products and Implications for Child & Adolescent Health

Intoxicating hemp products, such as Delta-8-THC, have become increasingly available, which raises special concerns for children and youth. Unlike cannabis, these products remain primarily unregulated with respect to production, marketing, and accessibility. Using local and national data, Dr. Stephanie Pike Moore, a socio-behavioral epidemiologist at the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) at CWRU, will discuss the implications of these products for child and adolescent health. State and local policy implications will be explored with insights from State Representative Juanita Brent, State Representative, Ohio House District 18.

Dr. Pike Moore has spent the past 10 years working in local public health and academic settings. Her research explores how social, commercial, and political factors impact substance use behaviors, including tobacco, cannabis, and alternative cannabis products. Her ultimate goal is to find opportunities for policies or programs that reduce health disparities and improve health for youth and young adults.
