Often grant models are inequitable, driven by funders requirements and needs for data, evidence-based practices, and their lack of appetite to fund what they deem to be risky. What we do know from grassroots food justice leaders are that the projects many funders deem risky are the exact ones that are driven by community and have the potential for the greatest change. But who determines what change looks like? Who is defining success? How are the mechanisms of the who and what within the traditional grant making model hindering or accelerating the achievement of nutrition equity?

Join a panel of Nourishing Power Network members as they reflect on insights gained through developing the first round of the Nutrition Equity Fund. Hear about the steps they took to “bake equity” into the Fund design, lessons from implementing the first round of funding, and what are the experiences like being a grantee of the Nutrition Equity Fund.

Panelists:

Lindsey Lott, BS
Lindsey Lott is the Development Coordinator for Birthing Beautiful Communities (BBC), a
nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives and reducing Black mortality by matching women with
a doula and a perinatal support team member from their neighborhood at no cost.
Lindsey began her career as a perinatal support doula and nutrition educator with BBC. She
began her work with the determination to improve birth outcomes through improved nutrition
education and support. Over time, her passion for the work at BBC transitions to wanting the
community doula program to remain free for all in need. She decided fundraising for the
organization was the best way to do that. A native of Cleveland, Lindsey holds a BS from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and is certified in Nonprofit Management. She served on the Swetland Center’s Nourishing Power Advisory Council, focusing on the Nutrition Equity Fund.
