On Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 9am-1pm we will be upgrading our data.case.edu Tableau server to version 2021.4.2. There may be times within this window that the server will be unavailable to view and/or publish new dashboards. However, with this upgrade we will see a number of feature enhancements for Tableau creators. Below you will find a selected list of these features, however for a full list please visit Tableau.com and review the release notes.
Please note that if you would like to utilize these features in your visualizations you will need to upgrade your Tableau desktop application to 2021.4.2. You can download the new version of the application here or enter a help desk ticket for those that need assistance with application installations.
Just a reminder that the desktop application version that you use must stay behind the server version that we are on or you will receive errors when trying to publish. We will be upgrading the server approximately four times per year on a quarterly basis, unless there is an urgent security patch that requires attention.
Please contact my team if you have any questions at utech-analytics@case.edu.

2021.2
Collections - Finding the data you need for your analysis has never been easier. Collections are a new way to gather the content from across your site on Tableau Online or Server and organize it to fit how you use it. Collections can contain items that span different projects and workbooks, allowing you to reuse content in multiple contexts without additional storage or resources. And, it’s easy to organize and share content around key topics such as curated resources for new users for onboarding or a center of excellence collection that includes dashboards showcasing best practices.
Connected Desktop for web authoring - Enjoy a more cohesive and flexible web authoring experience. Creators can now transition seamlessly from web authoring to Tableau Desktop with a click of a button. Start your workflow in web authoring and choose to transition to Desktop at any point in your analysis—without having to download the workbook. When you’re finished, simply save to Tableau Online or Server so your content reflects the latest changes for others in your organization.
Area spatial calculation - With the area spatial calc, you can now measure the square area of your selection on a map in units that you specify. Combined with the power of spatial joins, answering location-based questions is easier than ever. For example, you can now easily calculate the total acres of multiple parks you've selected on a map. Or, a business could use this to calculate population densities to inform about where to place a store.
Map layer control - When viewing a worksheet or dashboard that includes a map, consumers now have the flexibility to control the visibility and interactivity of the marks layers without editing the workbook. When enabled by the author, users can simply use the new toggle settings to customize the map view to best answer their own location questions and analysis.
2021.3
Personal Space - Personal Space is a new, private location on Tableau Server and Online where users can save content before it’s ready to be shared with others. Users can feel comfortable exploring data and staging workbooks in their own dedicated space, and admins no longer need to create private projects for every individual to achieve this on their site. Personal Space is available to any user with an Explorer or above license.
Data freshness policy - Control the age of the data shown to workbook viewers by setting a freshness policy that will not load any cached data older than the set policy. Easily choose from multiple policy options to ensure that workbooks with live data sources never have unexpectedly stale data.
Rename published data sources - Rename any published data source directly in Tableau Server and Online from the data source page or by using Tableau’s REST API—just as you would rename a workbook. All workbooks that use the published data source will receive the new name on the next data source refresh.
2021.4
Centralized Row-Level Security - Centrally define and manage row-level security among Data Tables and have it consistently applied across all connected Tableau Flows, Data Sources, or Workbooks that depend on that data.
Edit published data sources - Managing data sources on the web just got easier. Say goodbye to downloading published data sources to Desktop to make your changes. You can now edit published data sources directly in Tableau Server and Tableau Online, test your changes, and publish—all without leaving the browser.
Copy and paste in dashboards - Easily copy and duplicate images, text boxes, and web page containers within the same and across different dashboards and workbooks in Tableau Online, Tableau Server, and Tableau Desktop. This new functionality allows you to build beautiful customized dashboards faster by maintaining and replicating the format, size, and details of already formatted items.
Multi data sources support in map layers - The capability of adding an unlimited number of layers to your map visualization just got more powerful. With support for multiple data sources in map layers, you can now analyze more data in the context of one another. For example, you can build a map that shows your stores’ location, accessibility, population, and revenue - all coming from different data sources.
