The event we're hosting is two-fold in its benefit:
First, we'd like to have experts on the issue of medical distrust speak on the matter. The audience would be (1) community members from primarily black and previously redlined areas (brought in through awareness from Pastors and other community leaders), and (2) knowledgeable experts and healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors, hospital admin. (recruited from Cleveland Clinic, UH, MetroHealth). Students and faculty from CWRU would also definitely be welcomed!
Second, we'd like to offer small moderated informal discussions, where community members and healthcare professionals can sit at a table, learn from each other's experiences/backgrounds, and find ways to better understand the topic of mistrust and of each other. The goal here is for both healthcare professionals and community members to see each other as other humans, each with their own lives, families, and goals, and to find ways that we can bridge the gap in health disparities caused by medical mistrust. Furthermore, we hope that this can help reduce prejudice amongst healthcare workers while simultaneously offering an opportunity for black individuals in the community to start gaining the trust of modern healthcare.
The event would include food catering and be recorded for publication through our social outlets!
