Join us on Wednesday, April 19, at noon as part of the Case Western Reserve University AI Speaker Series, featuring Matthew Lacombe, the Lamis associate professor in American politics at CWRU.
Lacombe uses AI as a tool for political science research, mostly focused on text modeling—using historical text-based data (namely magazine editorials and letters to the editor) and using machine learning algorithms to study their contents and how those contents have shifted over time. In his most recent book, he used automated text modeling to study the contents of 80 years of National Rifle Association magazines and gun-related letters to the editor printed in newspapers as a way to understand changing dynamics in the gun debate.
Lacombe will lead a discussion on how researchers in social science disciplines like political science—as well as humanities disciplines—can use AI techniques to study large quantities of text in ways that weren't previously possible.
This event will take place in the 6th floor large conference room of the think[box], with a virtual option available via Zoom for remote attendees. Once you RSVP you will receive the meeting link via email.
