You’ve established yourself in your field based on your excellent and innovative research. Along the way, you’ve seen the commercial potential of some of your work. Now what? License to large company? Start a NewCo? In this forum we will explore the possibilities with two entrepreneurs who have taken that journey; one, a research faculty in physics, the other, a serial entrepreneur. This interactive panel discussion will focus on the chronology of what they did, when they did it, and why—and the potential pitfalls to avoid along the way.

Afif Ghannoum is co-founder of the first total microbiome company, BIOHM Health (BIOHM), where he has commercialized consumer probiotics and microbiome testing kits that target the dual role that fungi and bacteria play in the digestive tract. Ghannoum co-founded BIOHM with his father, Dr. Mahmoud Ghannoum, who is one of the world’s leading minds in medical mycology. The father and son launched BIOHM in 2016 to bring Dr. Ghannoum’s science to consumers by creating products based on new understandings of the microbiome. 



A biotechnology attorney by training, Ghannoum has turned his biotechnology innovations into consumer products that have sold in more than 27,000 retail locations in the United States. He has also licensed technology to a global pharmaceutical company that is now sold in more than 100,000 retail locations.

Prior to founding AMG consulting, Dr. Green was the CEO of Kent Display, Inc (KDI). During his tenure as CEO, KDI invented and brought to market a new consumer product category, the eWriter, KDI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 22% from his arrival in 2007 until his departure in 2018. First launched in 2010 under KDI’s ‘Boogie Board’ brand, millions have been sold in over 30 countries around the world. The products are used in business, education, healthcare, military, and around the home. As CEO of KDI, Dr. Green transformed the company from an R&D focused licensing company to a product focused consumer packaged goods company with a global supply chain, sales, marketing and distribution. He led the construction of the first roll-to-roll LCD manufacturing line in the world, which is based in Kent, OH. This advanced manufacturing technique utilizes flexible plastic material to enable high volume, low cost, LCD-based eWriter products. Dr. Green advocates nationally for U.S. manufacturing. He served on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Manufacturing Council, the principal private sector body advising the Secretary of Commerce on manufacturing. He currently serves on Senator Sherrod Brown’s Ohio Export Advisory Group.  He has worked hard to rewrite the perception of Northeast Ohio’s rust belt manufacturing “from the “3 D’s” to the “3 H’s “ - from dirty, dark, and dangerous to high tech, high paying, and high value.  Dr. Green also drives local economic advocacy by serving on the Board of Directors for TeamNEO, JumpStart, The Kent State University Research Corporation, Cuyahoga Community College Board of Visitors, BRITE Energy Innovators, and served a member of the Cleveland Innovation Project Steering Committee. In addition, he also serves on the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Business Advisory Council and the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s Manufacturing Council.



Prior to joining Kent Displays, Dr. Green was Vice President and division Manager at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).  He holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University.  He also attended the Executive Summer School at MIT’s Sloan School of Business Administration.  Dr. Green has been awarded 26 patents.

Kenneth Singer is Ambrose Swasey Professor of Physics at Case Western Reserve University as well as Founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Folio Photonics Inc.  He received his B.S. summa cum laude in Physics from the Ohio State University in 1975 and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981.  He was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories from 1982-1989, and Distinguished Member of Technical Staff from 1989-1990.  From 1990-1993 he was the Warren E. Rupp Associate Professor of Physics at Case. Singer is a Fellow of both the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America.


Singer's research interests are in organic optoelectronic materials, including nonlinear optical phenomena and electronic properties and transport in liquid crystals and polymers.  His current projects include optical data storage, cavity polaritons, photonics in multilayer polymer films, and using optical profilometry and machine learning for art attribution. His work is the subject of patents on polymeric electro-optic materials and devices, polymer lasers, and optical data storage.
