Creative Destruction Lab launches CDL-Cleveland in partnership with Case Western Reserve University and University HospitalsCDL

CDL-Cleveland will host a new Healthcare Delivery stream—the first CDL Site anchored to a health system—giving science-based ventures direct access to a clinical environment

Business, Law + Politics | May 27, 2026 | Story by: Editorial Staff

Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), a global nonprofit that supports science- and technology-based startups, today announced the launch of CDL-Cleveland in partnership with University Hospitals (UH) and Case Western Reserve University. The new site will host the CDL Healthcare Delivery stream, focused on early-stage ventures building technology to reduce costs, improve patient outcomes, and accelerate the adoption of innovation inside real clinical environments.

CDL-Cleveland is the first site in the CDL network to be anchored to a health system. Founders in the program will have access to UH as a living laboratory, giving them an opportunity to test their technologies with actual clinicians and caregivers, not in simulation. For healthcare ventures, the gap between a promising idea and a working solution almost always comes down to real-world validation and CDL-Cleveland closes that gap.

The site will be co-hosted with Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, which brings the management disciplines that determine whether healthcare technology gets adopted, how organizational change actually happens, and pathways for bridging technology and human judgment. For founders, that turns clinical validation into a path to a scalable company. For CWRU students and faculty, it is a front row seat to enterprise formation.

Healthcare Delivery Innovation Stream

The CDL Healthcare Delivery stream will support founders working alongside health system leaders and clinicians to identify, co-develop, deploy, and disseminate technologies that advance healthcare’s largest opportunities to create value—improving quality, enhancing access, and reducing costs. Ventures will move through CDL’s nine-month, objectives-based program, connecting with experienced mentors, clinicians, and domain experts, and will have the opportunity to directly engage with University Hospitals’ operations. By bringing founders and health systems into close collaboration, the program shortens the cycle from problem identification to real-world impact.

The stream also creates a direct pathway for UH caregivers and CWRU students to engage with entrepreneurship, learning what it takes to build and scale companies while contributing their clinical and research expertise to ventures that could change how care is delivered.

3 things to do in Cleveland in June

CLE Lakefront

There’s something special about summer in Cleveland. The city comes alive for those lucky enough to experience it. From weekly gatherings such as Wade Oval Wednesdays to local festivals, summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors here in the CLE.

For  Case Western Reserve University students who have remained on campus for summer—and for faculty and staff—we’ve pulled together a few ideas of how to make the most of the month of June in the city.

This is just the start, though. Check the Destination Cleveland website for more ways to fill your summer nights.

Parade the Circle and Circle Village

June 13

One of Cleveland’s most iconic summer events takes place just steps from campus. On June 13, head over to Wade Oval to watch a vibrant display of creativity during Parade the Circle. During this event hosted by the Cleveland Museum of Art, members of the local community show their artistic talents by creating costumes, puppets and masks.

This year’s theme is “momentum” and is a nod to the museum’s special exhibition, “American Printed Silks, 1927–1947.” The free parade will begin at noon. Learn more about what to expect at Parade the Circle.

The parade will coincide with University Circle’s Circle Village, which will begin at 10 a.m. It will feature interactive activities from local organizations.

Juneteenth Observance Celebration

June 22

Members of the Case Western Reserve University community are invited to participate in Juneteenth Observance activities on campus Monday, June 22. Featuring food, music, performances, a marketplace and raffles, this event will honor the day in 1865 in which emancipation was fully realized in the United States.

All members of the campus community are invited to stop by the event from 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the Thwing Center ballroom.

This event will be hosted by the Office for Campus Enrichment and Engagement, along with the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Division of Student Affairs, The Department of Human Resources and the School of Medicine.

MGMT 495: Value Proposition Design & Market Judgment (3 credits)

Launching a startup is daunting. Creating a new business within an existing company can be just as difficult. In either case, succeeding takes vision, grit, and luck. However, innovators who can clearly describe how their business model is meant to create value, and test their assumptions, can significantly improve their chances of success. Value Proposition Design & Market Judgment is a hands-on course that teaches students how to build viable, durable early-stage ventures. Through experiential learning, students will break down the elements of value creation, identify and test the assumptions that distinguish success from failure, and apply market judgement to evaluate and accelerate promising innovations. Students will engage directly with innovators, entrepreneurs, and domain experts who will help bring key concepts to life. As the centerpiece of the course, students will advise and support entrepreneurs participating in an accelerator program - a partnership among Creative Destruction Labs, CWRU, and University Hospitals. Whether students aim to launch a startup or innovate within an existing organization, this course provinces a practical foundation for designing impactful, sustainable businesses.
