MetroHealth's Bioethics@Noon: "Reading the Crystal Ball: Bioethics of Prognostication and the Disability Paradox" featuring Amanda Booher, PhD, MA, HEC-C
Details
Providing prognosis after brain injury can be complicated by the extended healing time--it can be 3 to 24 months before impacts and resolutions of injuries become clear. During that time, patients and families are faced with complex decisions impacted not only by potential outcomes, but by limits of care and resources, and by beliefs about disability and recovery. This talk examines intersections of neuroprognostication and disability, considering forces that complicate decision making. It also questions the roles and responsibilities for bioethics and medical providers in understanding the weights of these forces in order to best assist patients and families.
