Breakout Session 3: Leatherworking and Lantern Making

Join us on Wednesday, September 9 for our Rooted and Rising breakout sessions. Leatherworking session will be available at 6:20 PM. Lantern Making will be available at 7:10 PM.

Exploring 3D Printed Tooling for Leathercraft (6:20 pm)

Get hands-on with 3D-printed presses and explore how digital fabrication can expand upon and enhance analog tools. In this workshop, participants will use low-cost, open-source, fully functional 3D-printed presses and custom embossing plates to create textured leather pieces and assemble them into functional items like wallets or pencil holders. 

Lantern Workshop (7:10 pm)
Make your own DIY lantern! You’ll assemble your own glowing lantern while learning the basics of circuitry. After completing the LED circuit, personalize your lantern by adding embossing designs using the Open Press Project's 3D-printed press and 3D-printed embossing plates created at Sears think[box]. 

This session will be hosted by Jimmy Slagado Juarez, Assistant Director for Program Development and Implementation at Sears think[box]. 

Jimmy Salgado Juarez is a talented Mexican-American artist, born in Santa Rosa, California. Throughout his artistic career, he has wholeheartedly embraced the concept of curiosity, constantly pushing boundaries by experimenting with new techniques and combining multiple mediums into a single piece. This approach has enabled him to create art that is truly unique and captivating.

Jimmy's artistic interests span a wide range of mediums, from watercolors, acrylics, and gel pens to wood and leather. He enjoys exploring the possibilities of each medium, continually learning and growing as an artist. He is not afraid to fail, recognizing that it is an essential part of the creative process.
