Registration
Registration is now closed (this event already took place).
Details
There are a lot of really cool things happening in the neighborhoods near campus like East Cleveland and Glenville-- these local residents want to share that with you! The residents will talk about what they do in their neighborhoods, the impact that their work has locally, and all the assets that their neighborhoods have to offer. Students will have the opportunity to ask the panelists questions.
Panelists include:
Adam Whiting- 10+ year resident of the Glenville neighborhood, alumni of Cleveland Institute of Music
Jacquie Gillion- long time resident of the Glenville neighborhood, Diversity Coordinator at the Western Reserve Land Conservancy
Erica Burnett- representative of the Famicos Foundation (Community Development Corporation that serves the Glenville and Hough neighborhoods)
This event is being hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs as well as the Know Your Neighbors Campaign: a group of students and recent alumni working together to build community between CWRU and residents of the neighborhoods that surround campus.
We recognize that CWRU students are not integrated with the communities surrounding campus and may hold negative stereotypes about local residents-- seeing the neighborhoods as being solely defined by poverty and crime-- and that local residents often do not feel welcome on campus.
Our mission is to recognize the effects of past institutional decisions, establish positive relationships between students and residents, and cultivate pride that goes both ways through empowering local residents and educating students on the many assets of the surrounding communities.
