2024 Innovation Week Poster Pitch Contest
Are you passionate about research? Do you enjoy presenting the importance of science and research? Do you want to learn how to ‘pitch’ an idea in less than 2 minutes? Enter the 2024 Innovation Week Poster Pitch Contest! This contest is open to all students and post-docs. Poster themes of all disciplines and topic areas are welcomed.
Most poster presentations are intended to share scientific results to a focused audience. This competition is different. The goal here is to engage a broad audience. Each poster will be judged several times throughout the competition by multiple judges. Each time the judges introduce themselves, the presenter will deliver a 1-2 minute “pitch” of their poster. You can use a poster that you already have on hand or you may create a new one – the focus here is what you say. Review "Innovation Week 2024 Poster Pitch Competiton Tips" for more information!
Students and postdocs who wish to present must complete this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdUKBal5dNtKkNcM2EBoBAt5uJtwljUThbDiYXXOnwJYfl_nA/viewform?usp=sharing (must copy & paste that into your browser) by Thursday, October 24th and register via CampusGroups to participate in the Poster Pitch Contest. Space is limited. If you wish to attend the contest only (not as a participant), you also must register online.
Importantly, the ten (10) $1,000 awards will be awarded by CWRU and regional judges based on a poster presenter’s demonstrated ability to:
Concisely share the importance of a given project to a layperson audience;
Convey what important unmet need the work may address;
Present in an enthusiastic and engaging manner.
It is highly recommended that a presenter can utilize an existing poster as the topic on which their presentation or ‘pitch’ skills will be judged.
An optional preparatory "Preparing for the Poster Pitch Contest" will take place on Monday, October 28th at 8:30 a.m.
Schedule
12-12:30 p.m.: Boxed lunch featuring vegetable pita, local smoked turkey and brie on croissant or southwest chicken wrap (GF available)
12:30-2:30 p.m.: Opening remarks by Provost Joy Ward, followed by the poster pitch contest
2:30-3 p.m.: Presentation of awards

The tour will also offer insights into membership opportunities, including access to specialized labs and core services designed to foster innovation and growth for startups.
Tour will start at entrance near security desk.
Those in attendance at 75% of the tour locations during Innovation Week 2024 will be entered into a drawing to raffle off a variety of great prizes (gift cards, t-shirts, CWRU swag, mentoring sessions). We will track attendance through the attached tour map. Be sure to get your sticker at each location you tour!
Tour locations include:
11000 Cedar Avenue (Incubator)
Sears Think[box]
Human Fusions Institute (also at 11000 Cedar Avenue, 3rd floor)
Interactive Commons
Swagelok Center for Surface Analysis of Materials

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Join Interactive Commons (IC) Executive Director Erin Henninger and Faculty Director Mark Griswold along with staff from the IC to learn about CWRUXR (pronounced “Cruiser”) — a new platform that allows users to rapidly prototype in 3-D.
Iterative prototyping is an essential part of design—whether you’re developing a new medical device or a slot machine. CWRUXR offers a suite of digital tools to make 3-D prototyping simple.
The CWRUXR platform takes a new approach to extended reality (XR) development, making it fast and easy for individuals with no coding or limited coding experience to create and experience 3-D content. Additionally, CWRUXR offers added advantages like the ability to create and iterate in real-time, to create shared group experiences together or remotely, and to partner with AI.
During this 1-hr lecture and Q&A, attendees will get an overview of the CWRUXR platform and an introduction to its tools, such as CWRUXR Deck–a no-code content authoring tool for those familiar with PowerPoint, SDKs for coding languages (Python, R, .Net, and MATLAB), a simple model viewer tool, and various plugins for artistic software. Attendees will also learn about CWRUXR’s ability to support shareable holographic experiences for multiple simultaneous hardware endpoints (e.g., the Microsoft HoloLens, Magic Leap, Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, as well as iOS and Android mobile platforms in the same experience.) Finally, attendees will also hear about some of the many applications already running on the CWRUXR platform and being used in teaching and research at CWRU.
The Interactive Commons (IC) at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) was established in 2013 as an innovation lab, where interdisciplinary teams come together to solve complex, non-linear problems to create unique and transformative solutions. The language and tools we use to foster this type of collaboration are often based in advanced visualization technology, such as extended reality, or XR.
