Demystifying the Peer Review Process in Academic Publishing: Tips for Reviewers and Authors

Eleanne van Vliet from Elsevier

A cornerstone of academic publishing, the peer review process relies on independent experts to validate the quality, originality and significance of scholarly research prior to publication. This session will offer detailed insights into the peer review journey, from becoming a peer reviewer and critically assessing a manuscript and providing valuable feedback, to handling peer reviewed comments on a manuscript. Specific topics to be covered will include what editors look for in reviewers and reviews, how to conduct a peer review as well as interpret and respond to feedback from peer reviewers as an author.

The session is open to all researchers, librarians, and anyone interested in learning more about the various aspects and roles involved in the peer review process.

Eleanne van Vliet is a Scientific Managing Editor in the Author Heroes team at Elsevier, where she collaborates with authors, editors and publishers to help researchers publish their work across Elsevier’s environmental science journals. Eleanne holds a master’s and doctoral degree in environmental health sciences from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Given her experiences as an academic author, reviewer, and currently, editor, Eleanne brings a unique perspective from diverse angles of the peer-review journey.
