In this lecture, Dr. Kara Poe Alexander explores the affordances—the possibilities and limitations—of multimodal composition. Drawing on 170 audio literacy narratives, she examines how writers use sound and multimodal composing to disrupt the literacy-as-success myth and redefine literacy as an ongoing process of experimentation, connection, and reinvention. She considers what audio makes possible alongside alphabetic text, particularly for reflection and the transfer of composing practices across modes. Finally, she explores the implications of these findings for writing pedagogy in the age of GenAI, with a focus on fostering play, reflection, and human agency.
