This is the first session of a three-part Cleveland Neighborhood series on Hough in collaboration with the CWRU Social Justice Institute, KeyBank Business Boost & Build, and Venture for America. The Neighborhood Seminars are a subset of the Case Western Reserve University Entrepreneurship Speaker Series focusing on different neighborhoods in Cleveland.

Background on Hough
Located on Cleveland’s East Side, the Hough neighborhood lies between Euclid and Superior Avenues and spans from E. 55th to E. 105th streets. This community is located near some of the city’s most prominent employers, including the Cleveland Clinic and University Circle. In the aftermath of the Hough Riots in 1966, the neighborhood experienced incremental growth until the last few decades in which an accelerated amount of commercial and public investment has been made.

Professor John J. Grabowski’s interests and research span the fields of public and academic history. He specializes in the areas of immigration and ethnicity; local (Cleveland) urban history; and public history, particularly the fields of archives and museums. He holds a joint appointment with the Department of History at CWRU and the Western Reserve Historical Society, where he serves as Historian and Senior Vice President for Research and Publications. In addition to teaching at the department he also oversees the World Wide Web edition of The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History/Dictionary of Cleveland Biography, a joint project of Case Western Reserve University and the Western Reserve Historical Society.
Don Freeman
Retired Director
League Park Center
Don Freeman is an education activist and a lifelong Cleveland resident and graduate of Glenville High School and Case Western Reserve University. He is the retired Director of League Park Center in Hough, Cleveland. In 2017, his memoir Reflections of a Resolute Radical was published, depicting his life from a youth in Cleveland to his work during the Civil Rights Movement.
