Did you know negotiating conflict is one of the most critical competencies graduate students need to advance in their academic programs and careers? Have you experienced conflict with an advisor or within your research team? Have you experienced challenges negotiating with your advisor/mentor the pivotal turns in your career?

Negotiating conflict is a common challenge for graduate students. According to the American Psychological Association, learning to negotiate conflict with your advisor, faculty members and/or research collaborators is an important skill that will allow graduate students to navigate training, research and the dissertation process with greater success (Psychological Science Agenda, APA, 2018, https://www.apa.org/science/about/psa/2018/11/negotiating-conflicts).

Acquiring the competencies to manage conflict, find common ground to collaborate and negotiate toward your goals with your advisor and others is a critical skill for succeeding in your academic career.

Join the School of Graduate Studies Professional Development Center and Estelle Archibold, PhD Candidate in the Department of Organizational Behavior, for a three-part workshop series on negotiating conflict that will allow you to explore common scenarios graduate students encounter while working with their advisors and faculty members, pursuing their research, and preparing their dissertations. Participants will have the opportunity to acquire valuable strategies for navigating the academic journey and working toward greater success in their collaborations and relationships. We aim to build a safe and supportive community, within which you can explore your tough dilemmas and offer the wisdom you have acquired along your journey.

Participants may also opt to participate in an associated study which will offer an opportunity to participate in one on one coaching regarding navigating and negotiating conflict in your academic career.
