For 20 years, Dr. Gutfeld has led excavations in Jerusalem’s Old City, focusing on the Hurvah and Tiferet Israel Synagogues, and recently on the Kotel elevator project. These 19th century synagogues, destroyed in the 1948 War of Independence, have revealed remarkable features and artifacts from the Ottoman to the Iron Age, including Second Temple period villas, ritual baths, an ancient water aqueduct, a stone weight inscribed with a high priestly family name, and imported items. We will explore the history of the Jewish Quarter and highlight these significant archaeological finds.
