The First Amendment guarantees both freedom of religion and the freedom not to believe—cornerstones of the American commitment to religious pluralism. Join this lecture and discussion to explore the historical development of the separation between church and state and examines contemporary debates about the proper relationship between religion and government in a diverse society. Participants will consider recent legal, political, and cultural developments that have raised new questions about this balance, as well as perspectives from a range of religious and civic communities. By increasing awareness and encouraging respectful dialogue, the presentation invites participants to reflect on how Americans can continue to protect religious liberty and uphold the rights of people of all faiths and beliefs.
