Noah Greenberg came to fame as director of the New York Pro Musica, a leading early, music ensemble of the 1950s and 60s that performed in New York and toured nationally. Greenberg brought historically informed performances of 13th- to 17th-century music, much of it Christian, to wider audiences than it had ever known. Born in Poland, raised in the Jewish communities of the Bronx, and intellectually formed in socialist and Trotskyist circles of 1930s and 1940s New York, Greenberg viewed early music not as old-fashioned or religious but as progressive. This talk explores his life, musical projects, and recordings.
