11 AM – 12 PM EDT (GMT-4)
Sears think[box], Floor 2: Collaboration
Richey Mixon Building, 11201 Cedar Ave, Cleveland, OH 44106, United States
Details
Using low-cost, 3D-printed presses designed by the Open Press Project and a set of custom, modular 3D-printed plates and dies developed at Sears think[box], participants will learn how to emboss vegetable-tanned leather, experimenting with pattern, texture, and material behavior. As a bonus, the activity features a modular die system of “Truchet Tiles,” geometric shapes that create repeating patterns by changing their orientation. After embossing, each participant will assemble their own leather card holder to take home.
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
-Understand how 3D printing can be used to create embossing tools and dies
-Gain experience using a 3D-printed press system -Learn the fundamentals of embossing vegetable-tanned leather
-Customize and assemble their own simple leather product using basic finishing techniques
-Identify ways to replicate this workflow in their own Fab Lab or makerspace
