On Friday afternoon, February 21st, 2025, and Saturday, February 22nd , the Law-Medicine Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Law will host a national Forum for medical students to discuss the threats that they may face when they start their careers as physicians that could interfere with their ability to properly care for their patients. These threats include retaliation by hospital employers and others against physicians who advocate for their patients’ needs or who raise concerns about quality of care, and pressures from health insurers to refrain from ordering costly medical necessary care. Representative statements by physicians describing their experiences are appended to this announcement.

The Forum is free and open to medical students and others. You can attend in person at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, or remotely via Zoom.

The Forum will begin Friday afternoon with presentations by physicians and legal experts describing these threats, when physicians are likely to encounter them, and how they arose historically. Speakers on Saturday morning will describe the legal protections that exist for physicians against these threats and how physicians can get help to invoke them. Attendees will convene in breakout sessions Saturday afternoon to discuss what can be done to strengthen these legal protections, including systemic changes that might both improve care and decrease the threats, and what medical students specifically can do.  After reconvening to hear the breakout groups’ suggestions, the Forum will conclude by considering how medical students should be educated about these issues.
