History fact of the week:
The first documented U.S. gay rights organization, The Society for Human Rights (SHR), was founded in 1924 by Henry Gerber, a German immigrant. Police raids forced them to disband in 1925, but not before they had published several issues of their newsletter, “Friendship and Freedom,” the country’s first gay-interest newsletter. America’s first lesbian rights organization, The Daughters of Bilitis, was formed in San Francisco on September 21, 1955.
In 1966, members of The Mattachine Society, an organization dedicated to gay rights, staged a “sip-in” where they openly declared their sexuality at taverns, daring staff to turn them away and suing establishments who did. When The Commission on Human Rights ruled that gay individuals had the right to be served in bars, police raids were temporarily reduced.
Get Involved
Out of the Darkness: Suicide Prevention Walk
October 9th at 1pm Wade Oval
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosts suicide prevention walks across the county annually. Cleveland’s walk is right near campus! The walk starts at 1pm.
Justin will be meeting anyone who wants to participate at 12:15pm outside of Clarke. From there, we will walk over to the event. It will be an opportunity to learn more about mental health, advocate for suicide prevention, and walk with those who have lost. You do not need to register for the event.

Mondays are for the Boys: Masculinity Mondays
Audience: CWRU Men-Identified Students
Masculinity Mondays is a new initiative presented by a group of fraternities on campus in which participants will discuss various topics and their relationship to masculinity.
The goal is to take a topic and build a discussion based on a piece of related media, giving participants the opportunity to connect personal experiences to shared values and evaluate what masculinity means to them in this new context. The most important part is to ask questions: “How can I apply these values to my daily life? What am I doing well and what can I do to improve?”
Students will meet Oct. 25, Nov. 1, Nov. 15 and Nov. 22. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the discussion from 6 to 7 p.m. Dinner will be provided. Prior to each session, students can visit the Masculinity Mondays Instagram page (@masculinitymondayscwru) to find that week’s topic, link to a piece of media and a brief preview of the discussion. The Instagram page also will include a link to CampusGroups to register for the next session.
Custodial Appreciation
Our custodial staff clean our rooms adn buildings regularly. They are severly understaffed. Let us show our appreciation for them!
Give them a shoutout here. Clarke's custodial staff members are Donna, Kenneth, and Elliot.
Meet the Council
October 10th from 12p-3p

This seminar is intended to help increase your understanding and knowledge about depression, with the goal of providing you with the skills to recognize and manage symptoms. Registrants must attend all three Wednesday sessions on Oct. 7 and 14 from 3 to 4 p.m.
Intended to help increase understanding and knowledge about anxiety, the goal of this seminar is to provide students with the skills to recognize symptoms of anxiety that they may be experiencing. Registrants must attend all three Wednesday sessions on Oct.12 and 19 at 2 p.m.
Your RAs will be reaching out to intentionally touch base with you. Please work with them to schedule a time to meet - or just stop them if you see them in passing and you both have some time.
COVID-19 Reminders & Mask Wearing
Update: Masks
Thank you to everyone who has been wearing their mask consistently. In the past week, there have been 40 mask violations in the building. We understand that COVID fatigue is real - we certainly feel it to. The unfortunate reality is that the Delta variant is real and harmful. Vaccinated residents across campus and in our building have tested positive for COVID-19. While the vaccines have allowed us to be fully present on campus by greatly reducing cases, there is still a possibility of transmission. If there are any questions, feel free to reach out to Tessa and/or Justin.
BiWeekly Testing - Not our week.

These protocols are helping all of us to stay on campus and in person!
