Session 4

Media Literacy for the Savvy Provost Scholar

Date: October 18, 2018 | 4:00 - 5:00PM | Guilford House

Purpose

This session is intended to provide Scholars with an increased understanding of media literacy. The presentation will include a discussion about social media safety, "fair use" and plagiarism, and evaluating news sources for authenticity. The presentation wil also focus on the internet as a resource for preparing for the ACT and other standardized tests.

Objectives

At the end of the presentation, the Provost Scholars will be able to:

  • Identify three ways to use the internet to improve medial literacy.
  • Discuss two approaches to determine of a website is a legitimate source of information.
  • Name three ways that the concept of media literacy is useful for you and your academic work.
  • Identify three ways how media is both practical and challenging from a political, economic, and academic perspective.

Kate Klonowski is the Coordinator of the Provost Scholars Program which is a partnership between the East Cleveland City Schools and Case Western Reserve University. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Cultural Foundations of Education at Kent State University with a focus on scholastic media production. Ms. Klonowski is also the President of the Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA), the Higher Education Liaison to the Journalism Education Association (JEA), and serves on the Media Literacy Week task force with the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). She has also been an educator in private and public schools for nearly 20 years.
