Alma Woodsey Thomas Black History Month artist of the week

BHM Artist - Alma Woodsey Thomas

Alma Woodsey Thomas was an African-American artist and jr. high teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. Characterized by brightly colored, lozenge-shaped brushstrokes arranged in long bands or dense, puzzle-like patterns, she developed her signature abstract painting style in her late 70s. Thomas’s paintings are distinct in that they were inspired, shaped, and continually refreshed by her direct experience of nature. She studied the hues, patterns, and movement of trees and flowers in her yard and Washington area parks.

“Through color, I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man’s inhumanity to man.” ~ Alma Woodsey Thomas
