Subject: Special Announcement from the Graduate Council of Arts & Sciences: New Grants!

Introducing: The GCAS Professional Development Writing Group (PDWG) Learning Community!

Hello everyone!

GCAS is happy to announce that, in collaboration with the College of Arts & Sciences Office of the Dean, we have created the GCAS Professional Development Writing Group (PDWG) Learning Community! We envision that every graduate student in the College can benefit from grant writing training, whether they are going on to continue in academia or non-academic paths like industry, non-profit work, or management.

To that end, three workshops will be held this fall focused on important aspects of writing and applying for grants and other funding opportunities.

  • On September 22 at 10:00 AM, a panel will talk about “How to Find Financial Support to Fund Your Good Ideas.” This panel will be led by Amy Trostle (CWRU Research & Grant Development), Dr. Lydia Kisley (CWRU Physics), and Dr. Lauren Calandruccio (CWRU Psychological Sciences).
  • On September 26 at 10:00 AM, Dr. Brie Parkin (CWRU English, Writing Resource Center) will provide general “how to” information for “How to Write a Funded Grant/Fellowship Application.”
  • On October 10 at 3:00 PM, another panel discussing “Who Decides What Is Funded?” will be led by Dr. Barb Lewis (CWRU Psychological Sciences), Dr. Daniel Goldmark (CWRU Music), and Dr. John Protasiewicz (CWRU Chemistry).

All three of these sessions will be held virtually on Zoom and recorded for viewing afterwards, but we encourage live participation! Please use one of the CampusGroups events links at the bottom to RSVP for these sessions.

At the completion of these workshops, every graduate student will have the opportunity to write and submit a proposal to the GCAS Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Endeavors (GSSCE) Grants. Up to five GCAS GSSCE grants of $1000 each will be awarded in December! This grant is intended to be applicable for any graduate student, whether they are in the sciences, humanities, or arts; the funding is also applicable not only to research purposes, but for further professional development, attending conferences, hiring undergraduate workers, etc.

We strongly encourage every graduate student in the College to consider attending these workshops and applying for this funding! Please read the GCAS GSSCE Funding Opportunity Announcement for the full details, instructions, and important dates. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your Co-Presidents Ray Garner (crg56@case.edu) and Cameron Griffith (cxg419@case.edu) or the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Lauren Calandruccio (lxc424@case.edu).

Thank you, and we hope to see you at the first workshop!

Best,

The GCAS Exec Team
