Exciting transitions in the HEC! The M1s are finishing up Block 1 and starting to feel like true blue medical students as they head into Anatomy Boot Camp. The M2s are heading back to the HEC from their 12 weeks of research. They now understand how to ask a relevant question, collect data, and analyze the results….the scientific inquiry process…which is the basis of our whole IQ curriculum. We work hard to help all of you learn HOW TO THINK like a doctor and to have a STRONG FOUNDATION of both the medical knowledge and the patient care skills.
The medical school supports every student and welcomes diversity in thought and experiences. Please be aware that the following resources are available to students.
The Office of Disability Resources (ODR) works with students that have permanent or temporary disabilities to have equal access on campus and in their programs. They can be contacted at (216) 368-5230 or disability@case.edu. For more information, please see the Office of Disability Resources website at this URL: https://case.edu/studentlife/disability/
University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS) provides medical and mental health care for students of Case Western Reserve University. The value a collaborative and holistic approach to treating the mind and body. The UHCS website includes lots of useful information and is found here: https://case.edu/studentlife/healthcounseling/.
In other news, we will be introducing the enhanced version of HoloAnatomy.Next in the curriculum using Meta Quest headsets. We welcome your input about the new platform and appreciate those of you who have already volunteered to test them. The Department of Anatomy will celebrate the Grand Opening of the new state-of-the-art anatomy lab. The ribbon cutting ceremony is Wednesday, September 3, 2025, from 12 noon to 2 PM on the Ground Floor of the Robbins Building (Room G02). All are welcomed to join in the big reveal.
Our CSR leadership have worked hard to organize all events hosted by various organization into a unified events calendar in Google Calendar. For student interested in seeing events, simply click on this link and add the calendar. Special thanks to Kyle Barclay and Sahil Patel for their leadership in this project.
And finally, congratulations to Will Tran, MS1, pictured here with Dr. Dan Simon, President of Academic and External Affairs at University Hospital and Seniore Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the School of Medicine. Curriculum Update
Lyceum Orientation
All current M1 students will be gaining Electronic Health Record (EHR) skills through the Lyceum platform. David Kaelber’s big data talk during Block 1 already gave you a 30,000 foot view of why EHR use is so important. The conversation will continue with the Lyceum Orientation on Wednesday September 24, 2025 from 12:00-1:00 pm. Lunch will be provided between the Lyceum and Kowal SAGE events.
Kowal SAGE Orientation
All current M1 students are required to attend an orientation for an overview of the new Kowal SAGE (Senior Advisor in Geriatrics Education) program on Wednesday, Sep. 10, 2025 at 1:00p.m. in HEC 176. There is also a mandatory session for the “What Matters” module on Wednesday, Sep. 24, 2025 at 1:30p.m. in HEC 176. Lunch will be provided from 1:00-1:30pm. If you have curricular conflicts that will prevent you from being able to attend either of these mandatory sessions (e.g., other graduate coursework), please provide advance notice to kowalsage@case.edu by no later than 9/8/25.
In addition, students will receive a survey in early September for the Kowal SAGE Program to help pair them with another student. You will have the chance to select your partner, but if you do not, one will be assigned to you. Since students must choose each other to match, start discussing potential pairings with your peers today.
Interprofessional Education
The M1 class will be joining their peers in the other health professions programs (Nursing - BSN and Masters, Physician Assistant- 1st and 2nd years, Social Work, Speech and Language Pathology, Genetic Counseling, Masters of Science in Anesthesia, and Dental Medicine) to do clinically focused Centralized IPE activities throughout the year.
In this first half of the year, the dates will be as follows: Wed September 24, Wed October 15 and Wed November 19th each from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Students will be required to complete one of the three sessions in the fall semester and will be assigned to one of the dates.
If you have a conflict with another required curricular activity, you may arrange a swap with a classmate for a different Wednesday. More information about the session and the swap will be forthcoming soon.
Near-Peer Tutoring Sessions
The Near-Peer Tutoring program is back for the 25-26 academic year! Each week, virtual and in-person sessions will be hosted for preclerkship students. This includes weekly content review and MCQ practice sessions. These sessions are not recorded. You can register for group sessions, or sign up for an individual appointment at web.penjiapp.com.
