Join the CCEL Team as a Student Office Assistant  

Student Office Assistants work in the CCEL office to help engage CWRU students in CCEL programs and community opportunities by staffing the office's reception area to greet and assist visitors. 

A Student Office Assistant is an undergraduate student, can work 3-6 hours/week, typically within the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.; Monday through Friday, gets paid $9.25/hour and must be Work-Study eligibile for this coming semester and have a valid U.S. drivers license.

Join the Vote Everywhere Team as an Ambassador! This is an exciting, paid civic engagment opportunity working with a nonpartisan program rooting in a legacy of civil right and social justice The program empowers a national community of student leaders to strengthen democracy by leading voter registration, political engagement, and social justice initiatives on their campuses. The CWRU team is currently recruiting for one ambassador position. An Ambassador recieves a $1000 stipend ($500 at the end of each semester). The position typically requires a 2-5 hour weekly commitment.

Looking to improve your leadership skills this semester? Apply to be a CCEL Serves Leader for one of the following weekly CCEL Serves programs:

  • Help sort, prepare, box, and repack food to be distributed to local food pantries, hunger centers, and shelters to serve families in need: Mondays 5:30-8:30 p.m. OR Wednesdays 5:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Mandarin Chinese tutoring with elementary youth: Fridays 12:45-3:45 p.m.
  • Sort medical supplies for future shipments to those providing medical care in developing countries: Fridays 1:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Tutor K-12 youth at an affordable housing community’s after school program: Mondays 2:30-5:30 p.m.
  • Guide grade 1-4 youth in after school activities including wellness, literacy, creative writing and STEM through the AdvantageCLE Tennis & Education program: Mondays 2:45-5:15 p.m.
  • Provide creative writing or soccer instruction support to elementary and middle school youth as part of America SCORES’ after school program: Wednesdays 2:30-4:14 p.m.

American Red Cross Call for Blood Drive Co-Sponsors
CCEL is pleased to coordinate the Fall 2019 Blood Drives in collaboration with the American Red Cross. If your student organization is interested in sponsoring a blood drive during the Fall 2019 semester, please complete this interest form indicating preferred dates and locations from the following options:
  • Tuesday September 24 &/or September 25 at 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Thwing Ballroom
  • Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Wade Pioneer Room  
  • Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Wade Pioneer Room    
  • Wednesday, November 20 &/or 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Thwing Ballroom

Volunteer for One World Day



The Cleveland Cultural Gardens along Martin Luther King and East Blvd are unique to the world. Founded in 1916, they represent the diversity and multiculturalism that is Cleveland, and bring life to the Garden's mission of "peace through mutual understanding".

Volunteers are needed for this annual, one day event in a variety of roles. Ambassadors, registration, set up, etc. For more information and volunteer benefits, please see here.

Online Emotional Support Volunteer Opportunity

FrontLine Services is seeking evening volunteers for a minimum 6-month commitment to serve at its location (healthline accessible from campus) with the Crisis Chat program, which provides online emotional support for anyone who is depressed, despairing, or thinking about suicide. The next orientation takes place late August.

Fall Volunteer Open House at Botanical Gardens

Then Cleveland Botanical Garden has the volunteer opportunity for you! Register TODAY to stop by anytime during our 2019 Fall Volunteer Open House to learn about all the ways you can get involved. Meet our horticulture, guest services, research, library, education, and other staff to learn about volunteer opportunities in their areas. Talk with current volunteers as they share about what they are doing with us. Meet other potential volunteers and enjoy free parking, refreshments, and admission to our beautiful campus to enjoy after you attend our Open House!

Dig into Data with

If you are a student who is passionate about the difference data can make, apply to volunteer at Cleveland Sight Center entering data that will build the foundation for measuring outcomes for those who experience blindness and low vision. A 15 minute walk from Case’s campus with a flexible 2 hour weekly schedule, data entry volunteers will gain valuable experience navigating client care systems and inputting information that will impact service delivery to patient and client recipients.

Volunteer at the Farm Harvest Festival Saturday, September 14th

Volunteers are needed between 11:30 and 7 and are free to enjoy the festival before and after their shifts. Buses will provide transportation to and from the University Farm (37125 Fairmount Boulevard, Hunting Valley OH 44022).

The Farm Harvest Festival is an annual event put on by the Student Sustainability Council aimed at getting the CWRU community outside to enjoy the University Farm and learn about sustainability. The festival includes everything from guided hikes and hay rides to sustainability research presentations, student group performances, food, and much more.

NEW Civic Engagement Related Course Offering

For those still exploring Fall 2019 options - SASS 369: Social Networking and Community Organizing in the 21st Century (Thursdays, 2-4:30pm)

This course will examine community and community organizing as it has evolved into the 21st century. It will provide an overview of the concepts and philosophy of community organizing. It will examine strategies of community organizing as a means of social change. Students will learn the history, frameworks and models of community organizing. The course will examine the potential and the challenges that these efforts have faced and the lessons learned to date.

Students will also learn practice skills and social processes in community building, consensus organizing, and direct action. Skills will be developed in such areas as empowerment, issue strategizing, recruitment, leadership development, effective messaging, meeting facilitation, coalition building, and organizing using the social media. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with and critique various strategies for social change.
