Message from Vice Dean Logio

It’s June! We’ve finally hit our stride with spectacular summer weather. And in less than three weeks, we will welcome our incoming class of first year medical students. We have 216 students coming, 172 in the WR2/University Program, 12 in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) and 32 in the Lerner College program. They are coming to us from 79 different colleges and universities and include more women than men with 81% having taken at least one gap year. We are busy getting ready for Orientation followed by the White Coat Ceremony and then BAM, Block 1 will start on July 13th! Special recognition to our Peer Handoff Student Leaders: Noa Phillips, Ashish, Nalla, Melina Varlamos, and Karina Frey.

I’ll also wish everyone a Happy Semiquincentennial! On July 4, 2026, the United States of America celebrates its 250th birthday as a country. July 4th is always a great time for ice cream!

Considering an Extension Year?

As of May 4, 2026, the new Extension Monitoring Committee (EMC) has begun its work in supporting students on an academic extension. The EMC is a new subcommittee of the Student Assessment Committee and has been charged with three responsibilities as outlined in the policy on Extension Time Requirements and Monitoring. After a student is approved for an extension, the EMC 1) reviews and approves the student’s plan regarding the extension time, 2) monitors completion of each student’s stated goals for the extension, and 3) assigns, at the end, the specific designation for the student’s transcript (Research Extension, Independent Study of Medicine, or Enrichment). The EMC aims to ensure students maximize the use of their time on extension to remain on track to graduate and to successfully match into residency. For all questions related to the new EMC, please email som-extensions@case.edu.
